Mixing it up: a land conservationist blends watercolor & work

My solo exhibit at the Vermont Governor's Office, Montpelier, VT

10% of all proceeds from this exhibit will go to the Vermont River Conservancy to further its nonprofit work "protecting exceptional lands along our waters." Please support of all our nonprofits dedicated to protecting our special places! You might recognize several protected places among my works...

The Governor's office is in the Pavilion building on Gov.Davis Avenue just off State Street (near Capitol Plaza, the gas station, what used to be Thrush Tavern). Note: you need a photo i.d. at the front security desk, then go up to the 5th floor; always open to the public during business hours. What a great state that encourages private artists to exhibit their works in its public buildings!

Mimi's Hoophouse

This is a scene loosely based on Wellspring Farm, my local CSA. I was extra slow picking my produce one day, but rewarded by a late afternoon sky glow that reflected everywhere. I had never really noticed the hoophouse, as big as it is, 'til that day in that light. Apologies to the farm dog that morphed into a border collie for art's sake.

This is a small 8x10 of draft horses and their man I call "Hard Days' Work." I was aiming for a half-abstract but didn't catch the look I wanted. I'll be trying this again.

It's a mystery why the openings in the cupola are different shapes, but that is how the actual barn was. This was based on a day that almost felt like spring.

Thistle Hill Farm 14 x 20 watercolor. This is a place on Thistle Hill on a shortcut I take to Cabot, Vermont. Typical of a hill farm, it has seen better days. The sheep like it just fine. (sold)

I work in both watercolor and acrylic which explains the different styles. Switching from one to the other helps me relax & not get too fussy. I like the knifestrokes, the granulations, splatters, & drips to show. Watercolors can be unruly and insubordinate, and I love them for that. If you want realism, take a photograph.

Unlike oils & their solvents, water-based paints are nontoxic. Acrylic paintings last longer than oil-based works and hold up to UV light when oils can fade & crack. For watercolor I use the highest quality colorfast Daniel Smith or Holbein pigments on 100% acid-free cotton.

Dorset Sheep Day 16 x 20 acrylic. One day I noticed the clouds and sheep wool had a lot in common. Maybe the sky reflected off the sheep, but it seemed the animals both absorbed and radiated the atmosphere of the day.

"Nulhegan River" watercolor 12x16. -->>This is available as a 11x14.5 giclee print for $75 (+tax & shipping).
The Nulhegan runs through the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. This memorializes the snowy day in December of 2007 when the owners, the Belknaps, conserved the parcel on the right with the Vermont River Conservancy and the State Department of Forests, Parks & Recreation. Now it will be a public access point for everyone to enjoy the river at its outlet to the Connecticut River.

You never know what kind explosion will happen when you mix things up. The same waters that run through our rivers, moisten my palette. Earth’s minerals are ground into pigments. Add a little light, a little wonder. Should I mention the panic? Hope for magic.

I love New England’s skies, water, and soils. I also love water-based paints: their brushstrokes, splatters, and granulations. A hand-held fireworks display. A blooming garden of color. Let the knifestrokes and drips show! Painting is about creating an imperfect illusion.

My other work -- land conservation throughout the many farms, trails, ecosystems, and vistas of New England –- continues to inform me as an artist.

My technique is to combine these loves, shake well, and pour lavish amounts onto wet canvas.
